A SHORT HISTORY
OF A.R.F.O.R.A.

When immigrants from Romania first arrived in North America, one of their prime concerns was to build churches to take care of their spiritual needs and to provide religious services for weddings, baptisms and funerals.  As early as 1902, when the first Romanian Orthodox Church was built in North America, a small group of women organized to provide embroidered cloths, to clean the church and even to give financial assistance to the church when needed.

The first attempt to organize the local ladies auxiliaries internationally was made at the Episcopate Congress in Chicago, Illinois, in 1934 when the Society of Orthodox Romanian Auxiliaries (S.O.R.A.) was established.  In 1938, His Grace, Bishop POLICARP reactivated the organization under the name of A.R.F.O.R.A.  In 1955, the Constitution and By-laws were revised and approved by the A.R.F.O.R.A. Congress held in New York, New York.

In June 1961, at the A.R.F.O.F.A. Congress in Warren, Ohio, Saint Parascheva was chosen as the Patron Saint.

In 1967, A.R.F.O.R.A. decided that retreats for women be held annually on the fifth Saturday of Great Lent.  These retreats have become a most meaningful part of A.R.F.O.R.A.'s calendar of events.

In 1971, the name of the organization was changed to include all of North America, along with other revisions in the Constitution.  Other revisions of the By-laws took place in 1988 and 1997 to reflect the needs of the auxiliary of today.

PURPOSES OF A.R.F.O.R.A.

• To function as an international auxiliary of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America;

• To initiate and promote unity, cooperation and fellowship among the ladies auxiliaries of the parishes under the jurisdiction of the Episcopate;

• To contribute to the preservation, strengthening and propagation of the Orthodox Faith through personal devotion and common projects;

• To be of service to the programs and needs of the Episcopate;

• To raise funds for religious, charitable and cultural purposes as defined and approved by the Episcopate.

 
WHO SHOULD BELONG?

All adult women who are a part of a local parish or mission under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America should be full members of their church as well as of the ladies auxiliary.

SCURTĂ ISTORIE
A ORGANIZAŢIEI A.R.F.O.R.A.

Una din grijile principale ale primilor emigranţi în America de Nord a fost să construiască biserici în care să se slujească botezuri, căsătorii şi înmormântări şi în care să trăiască o viaţă duhovnicească.  Incă din 1902 când a fost construită prima biserică din America de Nord, un mic grup de femei s'au organizat pentru a dărui veşminte brodate, pentru a face curăţenie în biserică şi chiar pentru a o sprijini financiar.
 

Prima încercare de organizare a grupurilor auxiliare locale, la nivel internaţional, s'a făcut la Congresul Episcopiei, la Chicago, Illinois, în 1934, când a fost înfiinţată Societatea Grupurilor Auxiliare Române (S.O.R.A.).  In 1938, P.S.S. Episcopul POLICARP a reactivat organizaţia sub denumirea de A.R.F.O.R.A.  In 1955, Constituţia şi Regulamentul de funcţionare au fost refăcute şi aprobate de A.R.F.O.R.A., Congresul a avut loc la New York, New York.

In Iunie 1961, la Congresul A.R.F.O.R.A. din Warrren, Ohio, Sf. Parascheva a fost aleasă ca sfântă protectoare a organizaţiei.

In 1967, A.R.F.O.R.A. a decis ca femeile să aibă o zi de reculegere în fiecare an, în a cincea sâmbătă din Postul Mare.  Aceste zile de reculegere au devenit cea mai semnificativă activitate în calendarul A.R.F.O.R.A.

In 1971, numele organizaţiei a fost schimbat pentru a include cuvântul Nord, la care dată s'a revizuit şi Constitiţia.  O altă revizie a Regulamentului, care să reflecte necesităţile zilei, a avut loc în 1988 şi 1997.
 

Deviza organizaţiei A.R.F.O.R.A. este:
CREDINŢĂ - reprezentată de o cruce
SPERANŢĂ - reprezentată de o ancoră
DRAGOSTE - reprezentată de o inimă

 
SCOPURILE ORGANIZATIEI A.R.F.O.R.A.

• Să funcţioneze ca organizaţie auxiliară internaţională a Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America;

• Să iniţieze şi să susţină unitatea, cooperarea şi prietenia între toate femeile din organizaţiile auxiliare ale parohiilor aparţinând Episcopiei;

• Să contribuie la păstrarea, întărirea şi propagarea credinţei Ortodoxe prin devotament personal şi proiecte comune;

• Să ajute programele şi nevoile Episcopiei;

• Să strângă fonduri băneşti pentru scopuri religioase, de binefacere şi culturale aşa cum sunt definite şi aprobate de către Episcopiei.
   

 
CINE TREBUE SĂ FACĂ PARTE?

Toate femeile când ajung la vârsta de majorat, trebue să fie atât membre ale bisericii lor, cât şi membre ale organizaţiei auxiliare.
